CHINO HILLS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran placed a pair of Regals on All-SCIAC teams today as the women’s cross country team combined to place sixth at the 2012 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships held at Prado Park this morning.
Melissa Skiba ran as part of the lead pack throughout the 6K course and finished third with a time of 23:01.32. Mid-way through the race she was second behind eventual SCIAC champion Lenore Moreno, but fell back to the third spot down the stretch. Moreno won the race with a time of 22:07.95, winning by more than 50 seconds. Second place went to Allison Barnwell of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with a time of 22:57.21.
In one of the best races of her collegiate career, sophomore Chelsea Feller outkicked numerous opponents to place 19th with a time of 24:30.23, which earned her a Second Team All-SCIAC recognition.
Assistant Cross Country Coach Nicole Crawford talked to her race saying, “This was the biggest performance of Chelsea’s career. Moving up in the field and standings to earn all-conference as a sophomore is encouraging for her and for our team.”
Taelor Young was the third finisher for the Regals, clocking in with a time of 25:33.91.
The trio of Amanda Miller, Natalie Bullock and Chantal White ran as a group from the get-go and finished back-to-back-to-back with times of 25:47.17, 25:47.41 and 25:47.55, respectively.
Jess Infald rounded out the Regals running today with a time of 27:19.04.
Battling some illnesses earlier this week was apparent and hurt CLU in the final team standings, despite a number of stellar performances.
“Being slowed down by illness and finishing just three points away from Whittier and 11 from La Verne is encouraging to the future of this program,” Crawford said.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earned the SCIAC title with 30 points, followed by Occidental (66), Pomona-Pitzer (103), La Verne (113), Whittier (121), Cal Lutheran (124), Redlands (176), Caltech (234) and Chapman (265).
The top ten performers are named First Team All-SCIAC with the finishers 11-20 earning Second Team All-SCIAC.
Cal Lutheran will send a team of six to Salem, Ore. for the West Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 10:00 a.m.
